Plot Summary
Set in contemporary Moscow, Night Watch uncovers the other-world battle that upholds a 1000-year-old truce between the forces of Light and the forces of Darkness. For centuries, the undercover members of the Night Watch have policed the world’s Dark Ones -- the vampires, witches, shape-shifters and sorcerers that wage treachery in the night -- while the Dark Ones have a Day Watch that in turn polices the forces of Light. The fate of humanity rests in this delicate balance between good and evil but that fate is in jeopardy. From the Director of Wanted.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: Even though you couldn't call it a great science fiction movie, on the level of Tarkovsky's Solaris and Stalker it's often a great, heart-pumping, blow-you- to-the walls movie experience.
Fresh: Night Watch is shabby chic, with hints of Russia's great silent-cinema past.
Rotten: The punchy, nonstop visual effects crowd out coherent storytelling.
Rotten: What a rabid beast is Night Watch. What a pungent Russian fantasy-horror cheeseathon.

I love this movie
This is one of my favorite movies, and I'm so happy to see it here on iTunes along with its sequel Day Watch, which I look forward to watching as well. I find it so strange when people complain that the story doesn't make any sense, since it seemed to make complete sense to me the first time I watched it. You got light Others who feed on the good in humans. You got the dark Others who feed on the bad in humans. The Others are made up of witches, wizards, shapeshifters, etc., all of which can walk through the Gloom, unseen to mere mortals. The day watch and night watch are the police that keep tabs on each side to keep balance in the world. You've got a woman with a curse on her that is not only an evil force that must be stopped, but a bad omen of worse to come. You've got a kid who has the potential to become good or evil. And you got the guy, our hero, stuck in the middle of this whole thing. There's magic and Russian folklore. And there's awesome special effects. All basic stuff. What's not to understand? Some people are put off by the subtitles, but I thought that the subtitles in this movie are innovate and actually fun to read. Why is that, you ask? They aren't a distraction taking you out of the movie. The subtitles in this film interact with their environment. They sometimes disappear behind objects, or move with the camera, corresponding to the manner and tone of the scene. A hand will wave, and the words will be wiped off the screen. I think the subtitles are fantastic, and part of the experience of the movie. It's no more difficult to be able to read and watch at the same time than it is to read a comic book. Overall, I give it four stars. I just took off one star for the cheesy anti-abortion message near the end.
NOT IN ENGLISH!!!!
just a warning.
The Plot Unwinds
This movie is really the introduction for the trilogy...though still very girpping. It is not as good as the Day Watch, which follows Night Watch. Though do not missunderstand me, I highly suggest watching this movie, just know that things are just begining to unwind, they truly explode in the next movie. But to understand the next one, you HAVE to watch this one! And it just happens also to be quite breath taking! Its one of the most clever plots of fantasy released in a while! Do not hesitate to rent this movie, its worth well over the couple dollars, but you HAVE to watch Day Watch, because the next movie truly does not dissapoint!
