Plot Summary
Anything can happen on Nim's Island, a magical place ruled by a young girl's imagination. It is an existence that mirrors that of her favorite literary character, Alex Rover - the word's greatest adventurer. But Alexandra, author of the Rover books, leads a reclusive life in the big city. When Nim's father goes missing from the island, a twist of fate brings her together with Alexandra. Now they must draw courage from their fictional hero, Alex Rover, and find strength in one another to conquer Nim's Island. Based on the book by Wendy Orr and Kerry Millard.

Rotten: If Nim's Island were anything but a children's movie, the casting genius who suggested Jodie Foster as a potential love interest for Gerard Butler would be looking for a new occupation.
Fresh: Nim's Island is a win-win proposition: an entertaining, diverting adventure saga that offers excitement and a relatable heroine for children, and also will remind their parents of favorite classics from their own youth.
Fresh: Its characters, especially the youngest one, are engaging, and few adults are immune to childhood fantasies about secluded tropical isles.
Rotten: Just when the movie needs real girl power, it leaves its heroine stranded.

Nim's Island Review..
What It's About: Gerard Butler's charecter is a marine biologist, who has been studying this new species of plankton with his daughter. After his boat crashes due to a horrible storm, Abigail is stuck on an island with her various animal friends. Meanwhile, Jodie Foster, an agoraphobic author who writes a series of Indiana Jones-type novels, is having writer's block, and needs someone has expierience with volcanoes. She emails Butler, and Nim answers and asks for help. And Foster goes on an adventurous expedition for Nim. Is It Good?: I like kids movies as much as the next guy. They can be very entertaining, and in this case, educational. Which is one of the reasons I like this film. It sets a very good example for children, instead of just choking a bad plot and crappy 3rd rate animation down there little throats. I recall a little film that captured my heart a couple of years ago called Zathura, which is like Jumanji, but in space. That set the standard for me and good kids films. But despite the fact that this film was just between good and O.K. for me, it was leaning toward good more. If you're a parent, the kids'll dig it. What Stopped It From Being Great: The acting. Don't get me wrong, the acting was good. But Foster is better than both of these two, and she knows it. Breslin is a close 2nd though. But Butler was an enormous disappointment. I was very excited to see him burst out of his post-300 shell that he put himself in, but he failed to capture my attention. He does play two charecters in this film, one as Breslin's father, and one as the charecter Foster writes about, who keeps her from losing her mind. Sigh, Bad 3-D Strikes Again! (Twice): In the beginning it starts off telling an imaginary story that Breslin's father told her as a little girl. It's about this oceanographer who tries to find out what's in a blue whale's stomach. But, the film is used with 3-D story-book animation. It's the equivilant of watching cookies that were in the oven to long. Walden Media must've used all their good special effects ideas on the new Chronicles of Narnia. However, the end title sequence, has acually animation, which looks phenomenal. Why couldn't the animators just use the same animation throughout. Sigh, and there is a new animated movie coming out this July called Space Chimps, which is the kind of film that is going to make children become serial arsenists and mass murderers. It looks that bad. Thank God for Wall-E & Kung-Fu Panda. What Made Me Smile: Breslin's animal friends. Believe me, I'll endorse any film with playful animals, and this one has a seal, a seagull, and a turtle. There was a lizard too, which kind of annoyed me, but the seagull conquered all. And do not be fooled by the misleading commercials, the lizard doesn't talk.
Nim's island takes you away on a creative , heartwarming , adventure.
What a great family film. Kids will love this movie because of Nims adventures the humorous animals. Adults will love this movie again because of the adventure. And because the author who comes to help Nim is a germ freak(it will make more sense when you watch this movie!). All in all this movie is a great movie with a great overall point that everyone can enjoy. -The Review Master
