Plot Summary

In a fit of rage, Secretary of Defense David Brice (Gene Hackman) murders his mistress. To keep a lid on the scandal, Brice's loyal aide (Will Patton) creates the perfect cover-up: he "invents" a more enticing killer - a Russian spy - and enlists naval commander Tom Farrell (Kevin Costner) to find him. But as a chilling twist of fate would have it, Farrell also has a strong connection to the victim, and now all of the clues he's been hired to uncover are leading straight to him! In a desperate race against time, Farrell's search for the killer is not only a matter of national security, but also a matter of saving his own life.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: It's so effective, in fact, that when it's all over, you might want to sit through the beginning again just to see if the end is justified by the means. I suspect that it is. – Vincent Canby, New York Times, Jul 26, 2014

Fresh: No Way Out is an effective updating and revamping of the 1948 film noir classic The Big Clock. – Variety Staff, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: No Way Out's greatest prize is Costner, a leading man at last: fiercely good, intelligent, appreciatively sensual in a performance balanced perfectly between action and introspection. – Sheila Benson, Los Angeles Times, Jul 26, 2014

Fresh: No Way Out emerges, paradoxically, as a film that is better than it has to be and not as good as it ought to be, but there is skill here, as well as an admirable willingness to try something new. – Dave Kehr, Chicago Tribune, Jul 29, 2013

I want to purchase the movie

I love this movie, but I want to purchase it, not rent it.

The ONLY Costner movie I like

This is really a must see. I generally do not like Mr. Costner in pretty much anything else I have ever seen, but this was before he was a known entity. The story alone is worth the look.

Modern classic

This one is a great 80's thriller with a paranoid and nerve wracking premise filled with twists. Costner is a likable hero in way over his head, Hackman is his usual excellent self but it's Patton who nearly steals the whole show. Ruthless, committed and slightly unhinged, it's amazing there wasn't a heap of trophies waiting for him during the award season. The icing on the cake is, just when you think the movie has played it's last hand, the very end features one more ingenious twist.
