Plot Summary

One of the most respected intellectuals of the 20th century, Noam Chomsky has had a long and prolific career as a linguist, philosopher, and political activist. Undoubtedly, though, he is best known as the quintessential American dissident. Chomsky's criticism of U.S. foreign policy began with the Vietnam War and continued over the span of the next 40 years (and roughly as many books). "Noam Chomsky On the World: The Chomsky Sessions" delves into the mind of the man himself through a series of candid interviews, lectures, and classroom discussions in which he traces the entire arc of 20th-century American politics, from 1920s public policy to 9/11. Even more importantly, the professor emeritus sketches out a history of resistance and struggle that is fundamental to his political thought and, he claims, to the 'civilizing' of America. Disarmingly straightforward, tremendously informed, and profoundly insightful, Chomsky has the rare ability to illuminate larger patterns and systems, bringing viewers to a far deeper understanding of history, power, and the uniquely American privilege of protest. Thoroughly absorbing and edifying, "Noam Chomsky On the World: The Chomsky Sessions" profiles the luminous thinking of a man who has spent his life striving to educate, to empower, and ultimately, to liberate.

Noam Chomsky

My review is mainly a response to the review of optimyst. His "review" was slander disguised as a review. In his first paragraph he paraded forth the usual falsehoods I've heard directed at Chomsky. Well, as someone who's read Chomsky's writings for years I can attest to: 1)Chomsky was never an "apologist" for the Khmer Rouge. 2) He never supported Holocaust Revisionism. 3) He was a strong critic of U.S. Latin American policies in the '80's, but never equated them with Nazism. And, 4) (the most offensive charge) he never "gloated" about 9-11. This is a gross distortion of his writings about 9-11. These kinds of attacks on Chomsky are the standard way of distracting people from listening to what Chomsky actually says. And optimyst is additionally offensive in that, while demonizing Chomsky, he keeps describing him as "fascinating" or "interesting" in order to give some patina of civility or objectivity to a hatchet job. I recommend that people watch this film and judge for themselves regarding Chomsky's views -- they may find in them a great deal of insight and honesty and plain old-fashioned decency.

So-So

This film would be much improved with some thoughtful editing to give it a clearer sense of direction and a bit more visual complexity. I felt like I was watching raw footage, right out of the camera. It's worth watching, but this film didn't seem to have it's own insights and revelations about Mr. Chomsky or his ideas. It's really just a video of the man talking. But he IS talking about important issues and he is a very deep thinker. If you like Chomsky, you'll probably like him more after watching this documentary. If you don't, you'll be able to cement your own ideas by hearing his perspective in full.

Excellent!!!

This is a great introduction film to Chomsky's work and gave me enough curiosity to go out and read some of his books.
