Plot Summary

An embittered law student commits a brutal double murder; a family man takes the fall and is forced into a harsh prison sentence; a mother and her two children wander the countryside looking for some kind of redemption. Lav Diaz’s epic reimagining of Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment is both an intimate human drama and a cosmic treatise on the origin of evil. Unfolding across the sun drenched fields and dark city streets of the Filipino island of Luzon, Norte, The End of History is a tale of murder, hate and hope from one of the world’s most uncompromising cinematic visionaries.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: More than four hours long, filmed in expansive takes with almost no close-ups and very few camera movements, Lav Diaz's "Norte, the End of History" is a tour de force of slow cinema. – A.O. Scott, New York Times, Jun 19, 2014

Fresh: For all its specificity to the Philippines, its thematic breadth is universal. Diaz is a patient, perceptive observer of life. – Calum Marsh, Village Voice, Jun 17, 2014

Fresh: Norte is formidable cinema that doesn't shy away from exploring history, philosophy, politics and religion at length. But it's also a story of three individuals, through whom these topics gain sharper focus. – Tomas Hachard, NPR, Jun 19, 2014

Fresh: A political and spiritual parable, but related with such subtle realism and incantatory rhythms that it is far more mysterious than didactic. – Peter Keough, Boston Globe, Aug 28, 2014
