Plot Summary

Based on a true story, North Face is a suspenseful adventure film about a competition to climb the most dangerous rock face in the Alps. Set in 1936, as Nazi propaganda urges the nation's Alpinists to conquer the unclimbed north face of the Swiss massif — the Eiger — two reluctant German climbers begin their daring ascent.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: It is impossible not to put yourself in the boots of the mountaineers clinging to a sheer, icy rock face during a blizzard that threatens to send them into oblivion. – Stephen Holden, New York Times, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: The mountaineers climb for reasons that have little to do with nationalism - reasons the film clumsily attempts to articulate in words. It's far more successful conveying those inspirations with stunning images of them scaling daunting heights. – Ian Buckwalter, NPR, Jul 19, 2010

Rotten: While the movie is never dull, its romantic fodder doesn't do justice to any period at all. – Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: The word "gripping" doesn't do it justice. – Michael O'Sullivan, Washington Post, Jul 7, 2010

A Masterpiece,

While you will need to wade through the sub-titles, for the non German speakers among us, it is a masterpiece, and treat yourself to the HD version which has the visually compelling richness for this splendid period piece.

North Face

This isn't just a great mountain climbing movie, it is a great move in every respect. The story, character development, music, action, acting, directing, and cinematography on the mountain all combine to give you an incredible first person voyage into a time long past and the lives that were shaped and lost in it. I am proud of the taste and judgment that I revealed in purchasing it.

Great

Subtitles were a surprise, but I got over that quickly. This is a great movie.
