Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Boasting a terrific cast and a flimsy plot whose logic disappears faster than a rabbit in a hat, Now struggles to pull off its cinematic sleights of hand. – Scott Bowles, USA Today, May 31, 2013

Rotten: This would-be "Ocean's Eleven" of the magic world remains watchable throughout, even as it plods along without ever quite fulfilling its potential. – Scott Foundas, Variety, May 31, 2013

Fresh: Ultimately "Now You See Me" promises more than it delivers, though its cast is always fun to watch and the pace never lags. It has the magic for a while ... and then it disappears. – Tom Long, Detroit News, May 31, 2013

Fresh: Clever, original, wildly improbable, wildly enjoyable and directed with all the necessary flash and dazzle, the film combines the pleasure of a well-engineered heist movie with a twisty-turny plot full of wit, double-takes and sleight-of-camera. – Jim Schembri, 3AW, Aug 20, 2013

"NOW YOU SEE ME": IS IT WORTH SEEING?

When I decided to see "Now You See Me" with some of my friends, I kept my expectations pretty low. While the idea of a group of magicians pulling off a series of elaborate heists and getting away with it truly sounds intriguing, the trailers didn't really excite me or spark my interest as much as the premise itself did. Nonetheless, I was convinced enough to see it in theaters, and I have to say, this flick surprised me in ways I didn't expect. Was it as great as say, any of the "Ocean's" movies? Not even close, but it did end up being a lightweight, entertaining experience the whole way through, adding in a few fun, albeit utterly ridiculous, tricks up the plot's sleeve in the process. This story pits an elite team of FBI and Interpol agents in a big, wildly over-the-top game of cat and mouse against the "Four Horsemen," an elusive super-team of the world's greatest illusionists. They perform an epic set of magic shows across the country as a diversion to raid the banks of corrupt businessmen, showering the stolen profits on their audiences while staying one step ahead of the law. For the most part, it's all simply one giant, twist-filled goose chase that builds up to an unpredictable finale. The best part about this movie, by far, is its talented ensemble cast. Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Isla Fisher, and Dave Franco all give great performances as the enigmatic magician anti-heroes who we never know whether we should be rooting for or against. One thing's for sure, though. Their characters lack any discernible personality that doesn't already relate to their illusionist skills, which does prove to be an issue throughout the movie. But at least the actors somehow manage to make it work with their snappy, charismatically delivered lines. The same goes for all the people chasing after the Four Horsemen, which include Mark Ruffalo and Mélanie Laurent in a pair of serious, energetic roles as FBI and Interpol agents. I should also add that Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman are terrific as well, portraying their small but significant supporting characters with plenty of charm and wit. So when it comes to the major faults the film just can't seem to cover up, they can pretty much all be found in the underdeveloped, overcomplicated script, which has a tendency to leave us scratching our heads in bewilderment than leaving us dazzled by the cool tricks and neat action sequences. Sure, you can argue that it's all part of the fun to guess what's going on at every wild turn, but the plot is just so riddled with weird narrative detours that go nowhere and overly complex layers that scatter the story that it eventually becomes more confusing than enjoyable. Not to mention the overall payoff at the very end is a little less than satisfying. But despite the preposterous execution of its daring premise, "Now You See Me" still ended up being a fun, thrilling adventure. Plus, my friends enjoyed it too, so I can't really complain. At the end of the day, the movie is just a nonsensical piece of summer popcorn entertainment full of great actors and fast-paced action, and it never tries to be anything different. Yeah, sure it's convoluted and exaggerated to the extreme, but if magic and heist thrillers are your idea of a good time, then this crime film is well worth seeing.

IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN IT WATCH IT! IF YOU HAVE SEEN IT WATCH IT AGAIN!

This movie is possibly the most orginal movie story line wise I have ever seen in my life time. It is brilliantly made and so far I have seen it 3 times and everytime I've seen something I didn't see before. The acting in this movie is fantastic and that coupled with the story line is makes this movie brilliant. Also to any girls who are debating whether or not to see this movie depending on your age the following may or may not help. Dave Franco is REALLY HOT in the movie which is a beautiful extra touch to an already magnificant cake. Case and point WATCH THIS MOVIE!!!

A fun night out

Entertaining! Don't get your expectations too high (it's not meant to be Doctor Zhivago...please!), but do expect to have fun. And to have some things to think/talk about over drinks afterward.
