Plot Summary
NYMPHOMANIAC: VOLUME I is the story of Joe (Charlotte Gainsbourg), a self-diagnosed nymphomaniac who is discovered badly beaten in an alley by an older bachelor, Seligman (Stellan Skarsgård), who takes her into his home. As he tends to her wounds, she recounts the erotic story of her adolescence and young-adulthood (portrayed in flashback by newcomer Stacy Martin). VOLUME I also stars Shia LaBeouf, Christian Slater, Uma Thurman, Sophie Kennedy Clark, Connie Nielsen and Udo Kier.

Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: Thurman is the one blast of the life force in this handsome, sometimes funny, oddly remote film.
Fresh: The most shocking thing about the film is that it often prompts laughs.
Fresh: A pornographic work of art-obsessive, repetitive, at times remarkably eccentric, but never simple-minded or dull.
Fresh: Nymphomaniac: Vol. I is intimate, in-your-face, and, mostly, enjoyably ridiculous.

A masterpiece
This is one of von Trier's best. Surprisingly funny, incredible performances, loads of crazy sex. A must see - VOL II as well!
nympho is in a class all its own
this movie is in a class of its own! nothing like it has ever received this kind of release in the US before. it is a game-changer and a must-see
A Magnum Opus
This being the first volume of a two volume set of films in the 'Depression Trilogy of Cinema' by director Lars Von Trier, I first and foremost reccomend before viewing Nymphomaniac recommend viewing Antichrist and Melancholia, the first two films in the trilogy, due to them being viewed as a whole, although different stories, much more powerful.
Nymphomaniac sets a scene right away of 'mixed perceptions' and how the world can be viewed differently through each persons eyes. From the allegories, to the allusions, to the imagery the story unravels as though it is laid out for you to put together. Lars Von Trier does a fantastic job telling the tale of a self titled 'Nymphomaniac', and I personally reccomend viewing the film alone, with hours to spare, in the dark. It is a piece meant to be thought upon, and it may just change some of your own views.
