Part Sturges; Part Capra; All Coen
Coen Brothers owe as much to the Wizard of Oz as they do the source material (Homer's Ulysses), right down to the parallels between Everett's prayer and Dorothy's "There's no place like home." (Not to mention the Klansmen's march.) Movie defines Clooney as a classic leading man, putting him in the same rank as Clark Gable in It Happened One Night, yet defies him to find another role of equal proportion. Best slice of mythic Americana since the other great Coen opus- Raising Arizona. You can't say enough great things about this film only sit, watch and wonder. ... "And stay out of the Woolworth's!"
One of those "If I could only own three movies..." movies.
I LOVE this movie. But there's nothing I HATES more than cows! (see it and you'll get it). Inspired lunacy throughout. Every time I try to think of what my favorite scene is, I think of two others that also rank right up there, from Clooney's hilarious acting in the shootout at the barn, to the baptism in the river, I think this contains some of the Coen brothers' very best movie making. If I were forced to choose between this or Fargo, I might have to choose O Brother...no, no, wait a minute...maybe... But be forewarned, it isn't for everybody. I've talked to some people who think the movie is just plain stupid. Oh, brother...to the wood chipper!
A COEN BROTHERS MASTERPIECE
In the Coen Brothers canon of films, there are some brilliant hits, a couple inspired misses, and a few others that are perfectly realized. O’ BROTHER WHERE ART THOU? is the Coen Brothers at their most technically brilliant – a dreamy wander through depression era south lead by one of the best (and most over-looked) performances of George Clooney’s career.
