Plot Summary

For aspiring comedian Donna Stern, everyday life as a female twenty-something provides ample material for her hysterical and relatable brand of humor. On stage, Donna is unapologetically herself, joking about topics as intimate as her sex life and as crude as her day-old underwear. But when Donna winds up unexpectedly pregnant after a one-night stand, she is forced to face the uncomfortable realities of independent womanhood for the first time. Donna’s drunken hookup – and epic lapse in prophylactic judgment – turns out to be the beginning of a hilarious and totally unplanned journey of self-discovery and empowerment. Anchored by a star-making performance from Jenny Slate, OBVIOUS CHILD is a true Sundance gem: a heartfelt discovery packed tight with raw, energetic comedy and moments of poignant honesty and vulnerability. Writer/Director Gillian Robespierre handles the topic of Donna's unwanted pregnancy with a refreshing matter-of-factness rarely seen onscreen. And with Donna, Slate and Robespierre have crafted a character for the ages – a female that audiences will recognize, cheer for, and love.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Despite a few too-cute moments, the movie is both smarter and more sympathetic than that glib shorthand. – Leah Greenblatt, Entertainment Weekly, Sep 30, 2014

Fresh: Moment to moment, you believe what's happening in Robespierre's film, which is funny and rueful in roughly equal measure without being despairing in the slightest. – Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune, Jun 12, 2014

Fresh: "Obvious Child" is being promoted as a groundbreaking topical comedy about abortion. But it's less than that. And more. And, basically, not. – Ty Burr, Boston Globe, Jun 12, 2014

Fresh: Virtue and vulgarity fight to a draw via a film that should put the vivacious Jenny Slate and director Gillian Robespierre on everyone's indie radar. – John Anderson, Newsday, Jun 19, 2014

Loved it!

Just got back from watching this movie and it was so great! Probably one of the best movies I've seen in a really long time. It was hilariously pretty real and very endearing. Acting was great and it just felt like watching someone's life for a couple of hours. Can't wait to buy it when it comes out. Definitely worth the watch!

Abortion in a Romantic Comedy

This tired film is part of Hollywood's attempt to normalize abortion as a trivial part of everyday life. It is a romantic comedy that is lacking.

Saw it day of

A friend just took me to see it not telling me what it was about and at first it was a bit much from the first scene but they you fall in love with the whole thing. I hope her comedy is just as good
