Plot Summary
With white Jewish lesbians for parents and two adopted brothers, Brooklyn teen Avery, a local track star in high school, grew up in a unique and loving household. But Avery's curiosity about her African-American roots compels her to contact her birth mother, thrusting her into a complicated exploration of race and identity that threatens to distance her from her family. Off and Running follows Avery on her quest as she attempts to pick up the pieces of her life and make sense of her place in the world.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: The director, Nicole Opper, makes space for the complexities of transracial adoption without forcing her film into a predetermined, inspirational box.
Fresh: What at first looks like a heartwarming portrait of a highly blended modern family turns into a no less engrossing illustration of that situation's possible pitfalls in Off and Running.
Fresh: Opper doesn't angle for a climactic group hug, but she sticks around long enough to allow us to exhale while this intelligent young woman begins to set herself, quite literally, back on track.
Fresh: A patient, slightly stiff, often intensely moving portrait of a girl who believes her choices are literally black and white.
