Plot Summary
This internationally award-winning film casually and sometimes caustically uncovers what binds us - and blinds us - to the differences between our ways of life in the West with modern day Iran. Fascinating, funny and tragic, it's 'a gem of comic action' that explores the ambiguity between the sexes" (The Hollywood Reporter). The Tehran soccer stadium roars with 100,000 cheering men - and only men. According to Islamic custom, women are not allowed, and the ambitious girls who manage to sneak in are caught and sent to a holding pen, guarded by male soldiers their own age. Duty makes the young men and women adversaries, but duty can't overcome their shared dreams, their mutual attraction, and ultimately their overriding sense of national pride and humanity.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: As the political rhetoric between Washington and Tehran becomes dangerously overheated, Offside offers an intimate antidote: an affectionate glimpse into the cultural schisms that young Tehranis face every day.
Fresh: Jafar Panahi of Iran is one of his country's great filmmakers, and Offside is his best movie to date.
Fresh: Although its message is deadly serious, Offside is almost lighthearted, filled with wit and winning characters.
Fresh: As funny as it is sharp.
Customer Reviews
A very human drama that transcends gender and nationalities.
While I am not Iranian, I know what it is like to watch a 'once-in-a-lifetime' game (like the Superbowl or the Olympics), and the feeling that one gets while watching your team (and country) compete. As for being able to watch those games in person, I can only imagine how exciting and amazing that would be. While on the surface, "Offside" is about a group of females who risk being arrested to watch a 'once-in-a-lifetime' game, at it's core, there is much more to this film. "Offside" shows that no matter what sex you are, or what nationality you may be, we are all much more similar than you may think--whether it's our love of the game, our dreams, or our overwhelming need to feel a part of something greater. Excellent film.
