Plot Summary

In the tradition of "The Godfather" comes Sergio Leone's compelling dramatic epic chronicling the lives of two boyhood cohorts and their struggle to achieve power in the gangland heirarchy. Academy Award- winner Robert De Niro ("GoodFellas," "A Bronx Tale") stars in this powerful tale of raw, brutal emotion. Co-starring Academy Award-nominee and Emmy-winner James Woods ("Nixon," "Ghosts of Mississippi"), Elizabeth McGovern ("She's Having a Baby"), Treat Williams ("Prince of the City") and Academy Award-winner Joe Pesci ("GoodFellas," "Lethal Weapon 2 & 3") co-star. Receiving two Golden Globe nominations, USA Today calls this "a visually stunning film" and The New York Times says it's a monument of filmmakers." Included on the 1984 Ten Best lists of both The Hollywood Reporter and Siskel & Ebert's "At the Movies," and available in its epic, uncut longer version.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Leone is less interested in arousing an audience's easier emotions than in presenting, at a dispassionate distance, the horror of two men warily walking toward each other on a tightrope suspended above the snake pit of their , deepest compulsions. – Richard Corliss, TIME Magazine, Apr 12, 2011

Fresh: The film slips easily back and forth in time, dancing between the decades, often making the connection from one era to another solely by means of brilliant cuts that work like magic. – Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times, Apr 22, 2014

Fresh: As one would expect from Leone, the film is a brilliant stylistic accomplishment. – Douglas Pratt, Hollywood Reporter, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: There are times when we don't understand exactly what is happening, but never a time when we don't feel confidence in the film's narrative. – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times, Jul 7, 2010

Outstanding

One the best movies I have ever seen. this movie has the right script, actor chemistry, and the storyline is wonderful. Be for warned however: if violence, brutal language, and sexual content bother you, do not watch this movie. It is an adult movie about growing up in the streets of turn of the century New York's gangland. With that in mind. watch this movie and enjoy some of the best acting you'll ever get to see. Oh by the way, when you see the scene of the outdoor market place in New York, you'll feel like you went back in time

Brilliant!

Warning: the movie is long and requires your full attention. But it is a true masterpiece!

An American Classic by an Italian filmmaker

This is one of my all time favorites. Its long, but not a dull moment. It gets better each time you watch it. Up there with Godfather I & II.
