Plot Summary

An ulterior motive lurks beneath the Sheriff’s badge in the unsuspecting small town still recovering from the Civil War. In this story created by Aaron Spelling, Mitch, a Confederate veteran, plots revenge after his wife’s senseless death. By wheedling his way into the town’s good graces, Mitch becomes sheriff and slowly but surely begins to exact vengeance.

OK

It's not perfect but it's OK.

Aaron Spelling Should Have Left Writing To Someone Else

Well, this film is fecked with problems, the central character being the biggest problem. There is no real justification established in the film that would help explain why he behaves as he does, and with such rage. His wife dies after a druggist or store owner refuses to fill a prescription because the Ladd character doesn't have the $1.87 to cover the cost. It is evident that his wife, in child birth, and the child, is having difficulty and as a result she dies. He apparently accepts not only her death but also a job from the town as deputy sherriff. One hopes when a story is unfolding that it doesn't leave the viewer out, in fact, the best film always includes us. We know what is going on, we're privy to all sides of a character, as in the best novel or short story whose narrator shares what needs to be intimated so that the reader is in the know, but what happens in this western is we watch in disbelief as this shoddy story limps along until it dies a miserable death. The viewer would feel cheated if the story were not so bad it becomes comedy. I'll give this turkey one star, for effort. Aaron Spelling's collaboration in this script convinced us not to watch anything he has ever had anything to do with as a writer. The actors, all great actors, were obviously uninspired by the script and it shows. I would rent "Firecreek," if you want to watch a good western, or any of the Anthony Mann directed westerns starring James Stewart.
