Plot Summary
Katherine Heigl brings Stephanie Plum - the popular heroine of Janet Evanovich's worldwide best-selling eighteen-book mystery series - to vibrant life in Lionsgate and Lakeshore Entertainment's ONE FOR THE MONEY. A proud, born-and-bred Jersey girl, Stephanie Plum's got plenty of attitude, even if she's been out of work for the last six months and just lost her car to a debt collector. Desperate for some fast cash, Stephanie turns to her last resort: convincing her sleazy cousin to give her a job at his bail bonding company...as a recovery agent. True, she doesn't even own a pair of handcuffs and her weapon of choice is pepper spray, but that doesn't stop Stephanie from taking on Vinny's biggest bail-jumper: former vice cop and murder suspect Joe Morelli - yup, the same sexy, irresistible Joe Morelli who seduced and dumped her back in high school.

I read the books and loved them. So I was a little disappointed when the review were awful. Needless to say my expectations were low, but I was pleasantly surprised on how much I enjoyed the movie.
No work of art, but enjoyable romp
As a long time fan of Janet Evanovich's book series, I was not disappointed with this film adaptation. Many are critical of Katherine Heigl's casting, but I liked her performance and thought she showed a lot of sexy spunk as novice bounty hunter Stephanie Plum. The rest of the cast, while not brimming with big names (the exception being Debbie Reynolds), does a fine job bringing Janet's funny and well-defined characters to life, and I applaud the producers for giving actors with more stage and television experience the chance to shine on the big screen.
The direction's a bit workmanlike and the screenplay has its bumps, but overall it presents a fun, breezy adaptation of Janet's first book that neither veers into cheap slapstick nor takes itself too seriously. It balances the comedy with a healthy dosage of crime and mystery,and to those who feel it's tonally confused...well, Janet's books frequently shift back and forth too.
As an adaptation, it's very good. As a standalone film that brings something new to a familiar story, it's enjoyable. It's hardly the next Casablanca, but there's a ripe Plum here that's worth taking a bite out of.
ONE BIG, LOUD, ANNOYING SITCOM OF A MOVIE
My girlfriend wanted to see "One for the Money" since she had read the book a while back, so I agreed to see it with her on a date (even though I can't stand to watch most movies starring Katherine Heigl). Man, was that a huge mistake. The sitcom-like acting was beyond abhorrent, the dialogue was consistently cringeworthy throughout and the clichéd gags were obnoxiously unfunny. In fact, all it kept reminding me of the whole time was "The Bounty Hunter", only I would've preferred to sit through that awful film again over this stinker. Heck, even my girlfriend said she was extremely disappointed by the time the film was over. But perhaps I can't say the same for all the die-hard Janet Evanovich readers out there. If you can tolerate obnoxious over-acting, sloppy direction and a cheesy script, then you'll probably enjoy this movie. If not, don't even bother wasting your money over here. Honestly, maybe I would've liked this film more if I had read the book myself, but until that ever happens, I'm just gonna keep my rating at one star.
