Plot Summary
Legendary director Francis Ford Coppola (The Godfather, Apocalypse Now) spins a different kind of love story in this whimsical romance. As a Las Vegas couple's relationship teeters on the brink of disaster, a fight on the 4th of July leads them both to spend a night on the Strip alone in pursuit of their romantic fantasies. As they wheel past a parade of gamblers and dreamers, each must decide whether to bet it all on their own dreams - or give their marriage another roll of the dice. Featuring breathaking design, show-stopping set pieces and accompanied by Academy Award nominated music by Tom Waits, this unforgettable experience is also a touching romance about the risks and rewards of gambling on love.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: There's not a moment in One From the Heart when Mr. Coppola isn't after something romantic and glorious, something inexpressibly grand. At times, he even gets what he's after.
Fresh: A hybrid musical romantic fantasy, lavishing giddy heights of visual imagination and technical brilliance onto a wafer-thin story of true love turned sour, then sweet.
Rotten: A bold experiment in style and technique that doesn't work.
Rotten: Underwritten and overdirected.

GREAT MOVIE
When I watched One From the Heart in the movie theatre I was mesmorized by the sound track. I later read the movie was filmed entirely on a sound stage. How could that be? There were scenes on the streets and at the airport, I could not imagine they were NOT filmed on location. They film went into hibernation and I was able to see again for the first time since its original release. It still captures the imagination and the soundtrac is still hauntly sad. Love and lost love movies have been made before, ut not like this. This is a once in a lifetime movie. I am surprised and disappointed that Francais Coppola did not receive more credt for his great movie. I do enjoy his wine though!
I was 22 when i first saw this in 1982
The set design and and scene transitions are things of beauty and had me in awe when I saw this in 1982. The story of two people that love each other beyond words, but have forgotten such is not uncommon. In this case they breakup, move on in short order and realize that they are not better without each other. Call me a 'chump' (and in love I certainly have been one a couple of times in my youth) but I still love the story and the film. The film, as many have said, is an amazing effort and perhaps today it seems to fall short, but not in my eyes. To see what the artist intended, not simply what appears on the frame, often is enough to engage us in something much grander than the final outcome, or ourselves.
Excellent movie and soundtrack
I saw this movie years ago on late night cable and liked it well enough to buy the soundtrack, which really struck me as great even during the movie. Over the years I found myself wondering if the movie was really any good, or if it was a function of it being a long night out and 3am. I found a copy to watch it again (much earlier in the evening) and I have to say it was really an outstanding movie. A modern day opera of sorts, with excellent use of the music to carry the storyline and some great acting and writing to hold up their own end. Highly recommended.
