Plot Summary
In 1970, a young musician named Jeffrey Kagel walked away from the American dream of rock 'n' roll stardom-turning down the lead singer slot in the band that would become Blue Oyster Cult. He sold all his possessions and moved from the New York suburbs to the Himalayan foothills in search of happiness and a little-known saint named Neem Karoli Baba (Maharaj-ji). One Track Heart: The Story of Krishna Das follows Kagel's journey to India and back, his struggles with depression and drug abuse, and his eventual emergence as Krishna Das - the world-renowned spiritual teacher, chant master and Grammy-nominated recording artist. Fresh: Jeremy Frindel's workmanlike docu proceeds in a matter-of-fact manner that neither ignores nor belabors the inspirational aspect of its story.
Rotten: Insights are few in this fan letter of a documentary.

Amazing
We all have a story. The 60's were a tough time for everyone. Finding yourself in the 60's was an adventure. With the emergence of eastern religions into the American culture was way too far out for some to handle.
The story of Krishna Das is no different. Trying to find ones self is hard on anyone. His is full of all the things that make him real. His music, the man, and the movie are things we all can learn from.
The Power of Devotion, Music and Grace
Having recently discovered kirtan (the mesmerizing music based on Hindu chants), I was drawn to this film in hopes of learning more about the music and about America's leading kirtan practitioner. The film is certainly a wonderful celebration of the music, but it is much more. In addition to being artist, Krishna Das is an engaging spiritual teacher with a moving story to tell. It is the story of a normal troubled and conflicted boy from Long Island whose experiments with LSD lead him to Ram Dass and then to India, where he is inspired by the master, Neem Karoli Baba (known to followers as Maharaj-ji), to express his devotion through music. This is just the beginning of a journey in which devotion, music, and grace enable him, after long years, to overcome major obstacles (drugs, depression, ego) and to achieve real spiritual understanding. Including interviews with Ram Dass, Daniel Golemen, Sharon Salzberg, and several others, this film will go on my list of great spiritual documentaries.
