Plot Summary
Tilda Swinton, Billy Zane and Quentin Crisp star in this "hip, sexy and wickedly funny" film based on the gender-bending novel by Virginia Woolf. Swinton stars as Orlando, an English nobleman who defies the law of nature with surprising results. Immortal and highly imaginative, he undergoes a series of extraordinary transformations which humorously and hauntingly illustrate the eternal war between the sexes. Visually stunning and beautifully acted, ORLANDO is an intoxicating blend of romance, adventure and illusion.

Fresh: This is the kind of movie you want to talk about afterward.
Fresh: A silly and serious work of art that isn't afraid to entertain.
Fresh: Swinton's androgynous affect has rarely been better exploited: It's a kick to see her transition among Orlando's numerous identities, whether wooing a Russian princess or submitting to the charms of the horseback-riding Shelmerdine.

Orland-OH!
Lavish beyond compare. Intensely breathtaking both conceptually as well as ideologically. Unusual, poetic, stirring, haunting, transcendent, provocatively and wickedly drol. And these superlatives don't begin to describe.
Sally Potter is masterful in her ability to trigger the entire gamut of senses without calling attention to her wizardry.
And dare one call Tilda Swinton the incarnation of timelessness? A captivating actress whose richly evoked performance seems to emanate from her very essence rather than craft. A twitch of an eye. A twist of the torso. An economy of movement which somehow commands a stirring depth of character that isn't to be missed.
This is neither a flashy, nor intricate nor demanding film. It is, however, potent. And sensuous. And quiet. And vibrant. And mysterious. And here we go again with those superfluous superlatives...
The best movie I have ever seen
This movie is beautiful, thought provoking, and mesmerising. It is simply the best movie I have ever seen.
The cinematography is stunning, the costumes voluptuous, the acting sublime.
I want to watch this movie again and again. I loved it!
However, please do be aware I'm not the usual movie watcher. I hate Hollywood action flicks with poor continuity. I hate stereotypes and formulaic movies. I prefer foreign movies which make one think.
If you want a fast moving plot which spells it all out for you then don't watch this movie.
If you want to stretch your mind
This is one of my all time favorites. Beautiful sets, acting, script, costumes, cinematography and a story that forces you to leap high with your imagination. Every time I watch it I see something different. It's not a story about gender...not at all, it's a story about mankind. Humankind.
