Plot Summary

The pride of French intelligence, Hubert Bonisseur de la Bath – code named OSS 117 – has a new mission that takes him to the Bossa Nova Brazil of the 1960's. Teaming up with a sexy Mossad agent he has to capture a Nazi blackmailer with an embarrassingly long list of World War II French collaborators. With a jubilantly retro score and production design along with flair for 1960s era cinematic vocabulary, the filmmakers again have the perfect man to send up Western arrogance, French chauvinism and bigotry in general with biting satire and scathing wit.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Mr. Dujardin, a skilled comedian, deftly embodies the spy's combination of cluelessness and condescension, but it's an act that eventually wears thin. – Mike Hale, New York Times, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: I don't know that we actually need Agent OSS 117, but the world is a slightly better place with him around. And the film itself is a harmless trifle -- make that truffle, chocolate of course. – Betsy Sharkey, Los Angeles Times, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: A very funny French comedy of a variety that usually doesn't make its way here. – Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle, Jan 3, 2011

Fresh: A reasonably pleasant surprise. – Mark Feeney, Boston Globe, Jun 24, 2010

OSS 117 - Funny Again

Let's just say that if you liked the first OSS 117 episode, i.e. "Cairo nest of spies", then you will like this one. Only the set-up changes as the story now takes place in Rio instead of Cairo. This is again a parody of classical spy movies, well executed, brilliantly smart and yet you should be laughing out loud for most of the movie. Jean Dujardin delivers another superb acting performance and is well supported by the other actors. Overall the whole movie actually resembles "That Man from Rio" with the legendary Jean-Paul Belmondo released in 1964. 4 stars for this great and refreshing french comedy. Enjoy!
