Plot Summary

The most acclaimed motion picture of 1985 stars Robert Redford and Meryl Streep in one of the screen's great epic romances. Directed by Oscar® winner Sydney Pollack, Out of Africa is the fascinating true story of Karen Blixen, a strong-willed woman who, with her philandering husband (Klaus Maria Brandauer), runs a coffee plantation in Kenya, circa 1914. To her astonishment, she soon discovers herself falling in love with the land, its people and a mysterious white hunter (Redford). The masterfully crafted, breathtakingly produced story of love and loss earned Oscars® for Best Picture, Director, Screenplay (based on material from another medium), Cinematography, Original Score, Art Direction (Set Decoration) and Sound.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: With the exception of Miss Streep's performance, the pleasures of Out of Africa are all peripheral -- David Watkin's photography, the landscapes, the shots of animal life -all of which would fit neatly into a National Geographic layout. – Vincent Canby, New York Times, Jan 6, 2014

Fresh: Out of Africa is, at last, the free-spirited, fullhearted gesture that everyone has been waiting for the movies to make all decade long. It reclaims the emotional territory that is rightfully theirs. – Richard Schickel, TIME Magazine, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: Maybe the problem of the pacing is simply the nature of the beast these days with expensive period pieces. Once the difficult details are all in place, it may be too much to expect a director to resist milking every scene for more than it's worth. – Joe Bigelow, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: Out of Africa is a great movie to look at, breathtakingly filmed on location. It is a movie with the courage to be about complex, sweeping emotions, and to use the star power of its actors without apology. – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times, Jul 7, 2010

Magnificent Movie - Horrible Trailer

This is my favorite movie of all time. Fantastic acting all around and a timeless story of love, loss, perseverance and survival. It has one of the loveliest soundtracks I have ever heard, so it's baffling why they would include a trailer with such horrendous music. Had I not seen the movie before, I would have never purchased it on iTunes.
