Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: With its mixture of righteous politics and family turmoil, this didactic, unashamedly manipulative film wants to be something like a cross between Army of Shadows, Jean-Pierre Melville's 1969 classic of the French Resistance, and The Godfather. – Stephen Holden, New York Times, Nov 4, 2010

Fresh: Brings significant historical events memorably to life, largely through the galvanizing force of a trio of committed and thoughtful performances. – Richard Brody, New Yorker, Nov 22, 2010

Fresh: Extremely well-acted, suspenseful and produced on a lavish scale, "Outside the Law" may oversimplify the complex politics, but it's a worthy companion piece to "Army of Shadows." – Lou Lumenick, New York Post, Nov 5, 2010

Fresh: "Outside the Law" is at the very least a superior action film, in which the action sequences are plausible and grounded in reality. – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times, Nov 24, 2010

Brilliant

Elegiac yet triumphant. It was well enjoyed, Very interesting, sheds a great light on a time not well known, and highlights french colonialism in a very earthy fashion. The film had great realistic depth but lacked character completion. You would not understand why they click the way they do, but their passion nevertheless makes you want to watch further. Though if the story had a less matter-of-fact way of portraying its characters and the way they go around the movie, and had more depth as in "what made them become who they are" per se, would have just made it really amazing. I still enjoyed it, and found it better than the sordid flicks coming out of hollywood for the past few months.

Perfect movie
