ignore the trailer's blahblahblah
I ignored this video for a few months, then finally got it out of boredom. Don't pay attention to the pretentious introduction of this old documentary - once you get past the "anti-elite-true-art-is-MY-art" nonsense, you get the opportunity to hear the thought processes behind the various artists' work, and their particular focus of exploration. Some of them are pure scientists in a way, some you can tell are more into creating a movement rather than an idea. Then... there is the Warhol clip. I'm not usually amused and enraged at the same time by someone, but Warhol usually pulls it off. I was happy to find out about Newman, whom I have never heard of before, and to see that Jasper Johns seemed to have a delightful sense of humor that wasn't apparent right away in his more famous works. It was pretty entertaining and enlightening.

I saw this way back in 1980 (81?) and was very inspired by it back then. I've looked for it over the years, but haven't found it till now.
Good Subject, Bad Object
All the history and insights and information make this film worth watching, but most of the people (all the artists) have an affected, too-self-aware way of talking that drives me goddamn crazy. Frank Stella seems earnest enough, and de Kooning may just be Dutch. I skip through all of Warhol's bits. But anyone willing to buy or rent a mostly black and white documentary about the artists above will probably have enough goodwill to ride this film out to the end.
