Plot Summary
Superstar boxoffice champ and Oscar-winner Clint Eastwood ("Unforgiven," "Million Dollar Baby") is back in the saddle again in one of the biggest hits of 1985. In the tradition of "The Outlaw Josey Wales," Eastwood stars as the nameless stranger who saves a California gold-rush community from a merciless mining tycoon. An action-packed adventure climaxing in one of the most exciting showdowns ever filmed. Co-starring Emmy Award-winners Michael Moriarty ("Law & Order") and Richard Dysart ("L.A. Law"), Christopher Penn ("Mulholland Falls") and Carrie Snodgress ("Diary of a Mad Housewife").

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: I'm just now beginning to realize that, though Mr. Eastwood may have been improving over the years, it's also taken all these years for most of us to recognize his very consistent grace and wit as a filmmaker.
Fresh: It's all been seen before, but Eastwood serves it up with authority, fine craftsmanship and a frequent sense of fun.
Fresh: [Eastwood] understands so well how he works on the screen that the movie has a resonance that probably was not even there in the screenplay.
Fresh: Though the metaphysical overtones of the screenplay are sometimes awkwardly handled and Eastwood's direction of actors (other than himself) is occasionally uncertain, this was one of the better American films of 1985.

great movie
Old Clint is the best. Buy this movie
great movie
great movie one of the best westerns ive seen more coplex storyline more serious a great movie must buy. i would not buy it because you would not want to watch it more than like one time a year because you remember the storyline like forever but overall i would buy it forget what i said earlier
It just doesn't get much better than this
A grizzled Clint--"squint, squint, squint like Clint"--reprising another, more earthly version of his avenging and vengeful angel role, is about as guilty a pleasure as one could ask for in a Western. Michael Moriarty is surprisingly good in his role as the hapless gold-panner-become-family-man. Richard Dysart is quite good as the mean-spirited town boss. Well-paced, with the occasional light touch. There is, in fact, "nothing quite like a good piece of hickory." The rental in HD is nice, but the film transfer video quality is such that you do not miss much if you choose to buy it.
