Plot Summary
Ray Milland both starred in and directed the morose, minimalist sci-fier Panic in the Year Zero! (original title: Panic in Year Zero!). En route from Los Angeles to a vacation in the mountains, Harry Baldwin (Milland), his wife, Ann (Jean Hagen), and his teen-aged children, Rick (Frankie Avalon) and Karen (Mary Mitchell), are appalled to see a mushroom cloud forming over the L.A. skyline. With the highways clogged by panicking motorists, Milland and his family decide to head to the shelter of their fishing spot, there to wait until more news about the nuclear disaster is available. Everywhere they drive, however, the family is confronted by rampaging looters, heavily armed survivalists, and doped-up motorcycle punks. Attempting to remain calm and collected in the face of Armageddon, Milland ends up as violent and animalistic as everyone else. Though it avoids proselytizing for the most part, Panic in the Year Zero! does fall back on the old reliable "The Beginning" fadeout title. The most powerful aspect of the film is the "normalcy" of Milland's family: we are made to feel throughout that what happens to them could very well happen to us, and how then would we react?

wow I remember this movie !!
Good to see this movie after sooo long. I liked this movie before and thought it was ahead of it`s time because it that were to happen ,that`s the way people would act. Thank you I tunes!!!!
More Relevant Today than in the Early 60s
This movie is about a nuclear attack launched by the Soviet Union in the early 60s and the weeks after the attack. Unlike most movies dealing with the same subject, the destruction is isolated to a few areas in the United States with a large number of survivors heading for the mountains. There are no scenes of people with radiation sickness or radiation burns. It gives the impression the United States could survive such an attack and civilization would be able to rebuild itself shortly thereafter. Of course, by the end of the 60s and into the 70s, such an attack would have ended civilization for several centuries.
It is however more relevant to the world political situation today. What would happen if a terrorist group were able to detonate several nuclear bombs throughout the United States? Probably what happens in this movie. Ray Milland's main concern is the survival of his family. They hide in the mountains and have to contend with the fact that in the short run, society has broken down allowing lawlessness to temporarily run amuck. However, Ray and his family believe civilization will return. All they have to do is survive until it does.
