Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: The movie is that original, and that attuned to the power of myth. I don't see why it shouldn't sit on the same altar of High Fantasy as the Lord of the Rings trilogy -- it's that worthy. – Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly, Sep 7, 2011

Fresh: This is a fantasy realm so fully and elegantly realized, it might be the adaptation of a classic novel. Yet the source is Del Toro's own capacious imagination. – Mary Corliss, TIME Magazine, Nov 26, 2012

Fresh: Guillermo del Toro has crafted a masterpiece, a terrifying, visually wondrous fairy tale for adults that blends fantasy and gloomy drama into one of the most magical films to come along in years. – David Germain, Associated Press, Nov 26, 2012

Fresh: So breathtaking in its artistic ambition, so technically accomplished, so morally expansive, so fully realized that it defies the usual critical blather. See it, and celebrate that rare occasion when a director has the audacity to commit cinema. – Ann Hornaday, Washington Post, Jul 16, 2008

Excllent Rip for an Excellent movie!

So after doing a bit of research of this outstanding movie, I finally decided to rent it on itunes. Choosing only the standard definition version for my ipad, i was worried that this would not have subtitles (movie is in spanish), thankfully, the itunes team did their part by adding in subtitles making this movie very much watchable, as well as the standard edition looking amazing on my ipad! This was my first rental and CERTAINLY won't be my last!

As for the movie review, the movie has often been described as an "Adult Fantasy" Something which sounds a little corny. But people looking for something akin to Spirited Away in its breath taking visuals, amazing score and mature story will likely be pleased. The thing that this movie does right is taking into account the events happening during I believe World War 2. Someone like me with little to no info on it was easily able to follow along due to the likeable (and dispicable) characters developed in this movie. Each character has their own flesh to them, motives and reasons, making it that much more entertaining to watch.

With its darkened mood, entertaining characters, and deep mythology, this movie will likely go down as one of my favourite of all time!

5/5!!!!

Shockingly Violent

The biggest problem with this film was its trailers, which showed many of the stunning fantasy bits, and in so doing completely misled the audience in what to expect. There ARE some beautiful and haunting visuals in this movie, and an absolutely brilliant soundtrack, but the violence in the film was shocking and graphic. People getting shot in the head at close range, tortured with hand tools, fairies getting their heads bit off... it was all a far cry from what was advertised. Fantasy films are usually a form of escape from the tragedies of everyday life; Pan's Labyrinth is a well-crafted but brutal nightmare that I wouldn't choose to revisit.

YES! YES! YES!

I have been waiting for this movie to come out on iTunes! It is stunning. This is by far del Toro's best work. A mix of fantasy and tragic reality, a fairy tale for adults! It's beautifully shot, and the soundtrack is eerie and mystical! Finally!
