Plot Summary

Sylvester Stallone is fighting the odds again, this time in the wrestling ring. As Cosmo Carboni, he and his two brothers dream of getting out of Hell's Kitchen (circa 1946) and into the big time. The exit signs point to Paradise Alley, a sleazy private club where the floorshow consists of raucous wrestling matches with big purses. Stallone not only starred in and wrote this action-packed film, he also made his directorial debut in this tale of three guys who could take anything Hell's Kitchen could dish out.

Paradise Alley

When I first saw this movie, I thought it was better than what the critics were saying. I still think it one of the all time low budget sleepers. It's true to the genre meaning it's authentic for the time period, has the music of Tom Waits and it captures the post depression era around New York's Hells Kitchen (not a reality show about screaming cooks).
Yes, it's slow at times but if you are a true movie buff, you'll see a gem in this. Quirky dialog makes this movie perfect for Stallone who seems to be channeling Rocky Balboa but Armand Asante and Anne Archer turn in solid supporting rolls. If you turned away before, give it a second look. If it passed you by, check it out.

Oh hell no.....

Do NOT waste a penny on this, an absolute abomination of a movie leaving you wanting to scratch out your eyes. Horrible on all levels. When the lead character is named "Kid Salami" (not kidding) and wears a couple dozen salamis on a vest when he enters the wrestling ring in 1920's NYC, it's time to salvage your next couple hours of life and move on to anything else at all.

Cannot NOT recommend enough for anyone with a living brain cell.
