Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Moving, thrilling and new. – A.O. Scott, New York Times, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: The invigorating result, zestily edited by Lee's own inside iron man, Barry Brown, is in every way a knockout. – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone, Feb 3, 2011

Fresh: Passing Strange conjures a rare kind of theatrical magic with its emotionally raw, frequently euphoric portrait of the artist as a young man. – Scott Foundas, Village Voice, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: Like Lee, the artist formerly known as Mark Stewart possesses a powerful and singular voice, one he uses to express vividly his own unique experience of growing up as a black man in America. – Christy Lemire, Associated Press, Jun 24, 2010

two great minds, one never-fading favorite!

With Stew's musical ingenuity, and Spike lee's directive charm, there is nothing that can't be done! btw, did you know that Rebecca Naomi Jones (who is a knockout in this show, along with Stew himself and Daniel Breaker) was also on an episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit?

Got the Right One, Buddy

Stew and Heidi had the right idea coming up with this stage story--and telling it in a cliche-free manner. And Spike Lee had the right idea not letting this one fade into oblivion. PASSING STRANGE is as original, honest, and relatable as it gets. And it appeals to anyone and everyone. No bias, no stereotypes, no politics. Broadway thought it could evict this work of art so fast that musical lovers wouldn't know what went past them. Looks like they lost. Leaves me wondering, what else can the Ebony dude (and dudes of other races & faces) do? More than any of us know. Check out PASSING STRANGE today. And every day that follows.
