A comic examination of how young women really feel

Few directors understand women the way Eric Rohmer does. Pauline is a confused young woman who can't decide what she wants - thus she's grumpy, cranky, distant. She can't understand her own feelings during this important summer vacation. Why can't she connect with anyone? Why can't she stand her friends? Why does everyone she knows annoy her? She broods a lot, but her seeming self-reflection doesn't get her anywhere. Only after she decides to take responsibility for her own emotions does she meet the guy who seems to be Mr. Right. If you've been a 20-something young woman, you've been here. If you want to understand women, Pauline at the Beach is a gentle but strict examination of the ways women deceive themselves, and what they need to do to actually grow up.

Pauline At The Beach 1/2009

Sweet and refreshing, much like the film's location. Patience is given with each character, without too much self indulgence, save for Marion, which cannot be helped. Marion is an emo girl, wistfully dreaming of the impossible love. Pauline is completely charming, there are no words. Comedy, directing and cinematography are low-key with a calm and sensual pace, indubitably French in every approach.

Directed by Eric Rohmer

...odd that iTunes omits the director's credit here, in that an Eric Rohmer film is, well...an Eric Rohmer film. You know, Claire's Knee, Chloe in the Afternoon...if you like Rohmer. you'll love this.
