Plot Summary

Mel Gibson gives an unforgettable performance in this explosive film from director Brian Helgeland (L.A. Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: In the popcorn sense, it certainly delivers on mindless escapism. In the artistic sense, let's just say that Payback is a long way from Point Blank. – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone, Nov 24, 2006

Rotten: It's undone not so much by the shadow of Lee Marvin falling heavily on it (which it does) as by the twin obstacles of big star image and, more to the point, excessive violence. – Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times, Jan 22, 2006

Fresh: A higher class of thriller. – Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle, Oct 18, 2008

Fresh: There is much cleverness and ingenuity in Payback. – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times, Jul 7, 2010

Where is "Payback:Straight Up"?

This version is pretty good, but "straight up" is twice as good. When "Straight up" is available, I'll come knockin.

One of Mel's best

Once in a while a rare gem slips out of Hollywood and slides under the radar. If you like gangster movies, this one is action packed with laughs, and a plot that keeps you glued; I like it because you don't get the typical good guy vs. bad guy plot like most plots. Mel plays a bad guy who gets screwed by other bad guys, with drug pushers, crooked cops, and even his wife over 70 grand. Hats off to the editor of this 1999 version, I'm glad itunes offered it.

Good Movie

never seen the 2nd one but the first is really good if rent rent but if you want to take a chance of buying it it is worth every penny
