pretty good

i liked this movie.
i thought it was pretty good.
it showed the true meaning of being alone and lost
it wasn't one of Bette Davis's best, but not that bad

Divorce 1950s style

This is a little gem of a movie. It was fun to watch and I didn't think it would be as good it was. Bette Davis obviously carried the entire film herself, but there is some gravitas to it in totality and the sets and flashbacks work well. It's a portrait of a woman who gets everything she's after and of course loses it. The ending is strange and upon further reading I discovered it was different from the intended director's cut. Howard Hughes produced the film and hated the title as well as the ending and so at the last moment made the changes as it is today. I won't spoil it, but it didn't seem to fit the tone and intention of the rest of the movie. I also learned it was filmed before "All About Eve" but released thereafter when Davis was once again a star. There's some B-movie acting by some of the cast, mostly the men, but the ladies, especially those older and wiser characters deliver great lines and are amazingly fun to watch. I'm not sure if this is sort of an anti feminist trope with an admonition to women trying to social climb, or simply a universal message film of listen to your partner and love them for their true character, not for what you want to create them to be. There's also something very modern about the film in terms of the attitude and reality of the issues presented. This is different from more "pollyanna" messages of later 50's films. Rent it.
