Plot Summary
In this modern day romantic tale, "Penelope" is about a young girl's inspiring journey, a mysterious family secret and the power of love. With all odds against her, in order for Penelope to break the family curse, she must find true love with "one of her own kind." The warm and funny adventure leads her to realize the most important life lesson, "I like myself the way I am." Penelope Wilhern (Christina Ricci), born to wealthy socialites (Catherine O'Hara and Robert E. Grant), is afflicted by the Wilhern spell that can only be broken when she finds love. Hidden away in her family's estate, the lonely girl meets a string of suitors in her parent's futile attempt to break the curse.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: While uneven, this Ugly Duckling redux is hipper and funnier than a Disney movie, and the positive message to young girls can't be discounted.
Rotten: The picture has a hapless, meandering quality that's tolerable at first but ultimately becomes maddening, as if it were a cartoon narrative recounted by a distracted 4-year-old.
Rotten: Director Palansky and screenwriter Leslie Caveny seem to have many of the right ingredients for creating something beguiling, but the film is, finally, surprisingly pedestrian. What a shame, with all these good performers.
Fresh: It's broadly comic, sweetly sentimental and sharply satirical at times -- particularly when it takes on the concept of celebrity -- and both parents and kids should walk away satisfied if not quite elated.

Souns Like A Typical Fantasy Romance Movie But Rather Is Everything But Ordinary
Penelope is a 5 star movie up and down. From the vibrant colors, to the genuine acting, and the perfectly cut scenes and cinematography this film is perfect. I'm not one for romantic comedy/fantasy movies because I think they're all to dumb and cliche but this one separates itself from the rest with a rich story and refreshing colors. From Frame 0 to the very end of the credits this is a great film and I still haven't given any credit to the wonderfully put together soundtrack. I'm the guy that likes Scarface and The Godfather, and I'm also the one that despised Maid in Manhattan. Take it from me, even I loved it. Penelope gets 5 "must watch"es out of 5.
Great Movie!
I know this movie sounds stupid but it was really good! It has a good moral to it and i recommend anyone to see it....it makes you realize that you cant judge a book by a cover....and you will know what i mean after you watch this movie!!! :]
