Plot Summary

Combining stylistic elements of classic Polanski with a contemporary vision that rivals anyone working in horror today, the Bogliano brothers' PENUMBRA is a superbly realized South American horror slow-burner. Marga is a highly motivated, arrogant and successful businesswoman on assignment in Buenos Aires — a city she hates and whose people she loathes. While in the Argentina capital on a day the whole population is waiting to view a rare solar eclipse she must also find a new tenant for her family's decrepit apartment. Rapidly losing her patience waiting for one applicant she runs into the mysterious Jorge lurking outside the front door of the place who informs her that he has a client willing to pay four times what she is asking in rent. There's one catch — the paperwork must be signed immediately. As greedy Marga waits to complete the transaction several of Jorge's associates suspiciously appear at the apartment ready to strip the wallpaper. And what's behind the décor signals a startling fate worse than death -- or should that be life!

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: There's talent here, but Villanueva, like a young artist still influenced by his elders, needs to find his own style or he'll become a skilled yet unexciting copyist. – Jay Weissberg, Variety, Feb 5, 2013

Rotten: Since the movie is one long build-up to a reveal, it offers a lot of time to learn to hate Brondo and everything she represents. – Alison Willmore, AV Club, Apr 19, 2012

Pelamebra

This movie went nowhere. Not even entertaining on a hokey level. I swear the brothers who wrote this came up with a lame premise for an ending of a movie and then decided not to have any compelling reason to get there. It is well shot and edited, but who cares? (The sound track is actually pretty good as well.) The iTunes Plot Summery says that it's a slow-burner, and even that is a stretch. Everything that you learn about the main character, aside from her horrible attitude, is ancillary. Couple that with complete lack of any development or "Ah-Ha" twist I just can't recommend anyone watch this film.

Penumbra

Got screwed out of 7. $ forgot to check the language this thing was in Spanish I fell for the old trick of watching the trailer but there was no talking. iTunes put the language info. We're it's easier to see

Meh

How dare anyone compare Penumbra to Polanski. This is banal. And do not let IFC involvement lead you into thinking this is some little charming Argentine off-the-grid piece. There is no personality here. No one to love, no one to hate – not even the stereotypical Spanish jerk. The "torture" scenes —which the publicity is full of — were not a bit scary, but were brief and uninventive. Plot line: spoiler alert! read the plot description. That's it. No other plot. So worse than terrible, this movie just left me feeling, well, meh.
