Plot Summary
A young couple's stormy romance scandalizes English society in this acclaimed adaptation of Jane Austen's classic love story. Amanda Root and Ciaran Hinds of the Royal Shakespeare Company are the star-crossed lovers, Anne and Wentworth, whose passion is thwarted by a scheming socialite. Eight years later, when Anne is considered an old maid and her once-rich family is on the verge of bankruptcy, Wentworth returns. Will their second chance at love be ruined by the social conventions that destroyed it once? Or will the heart be persuaded by rules of its own? Adding flirtatious fun to Austen's irresistible romance, Persuasion takes your breathe away! A dazzling five-star feast.

Fresh: The film offers the same pleasures as an Austen novel, as the audience sinks into a comforting, orderly world where life-shattering disruptions are handled with elegant ease.
Fresh: Vanessa Redgrave has never been more likable on screen than in her buoyantly athletic turn here.
Fresh: Austen fans: Prepare to be swept away.

Beautiful and unforgettable movie!
You will find this movie to be as good as it gets, in terms of quality entertainment. The acting is superb from all of the cast and I have enjoyed it each time I have watched it a little more. My oldest daughter wants to own this movie and I will be sure she does! As a 42 year old man, I found Amanda Root's portrayal of Anne to be the most mezmerizing, unforgettable performance I have ever seen from a female actress in a movie. I find myself thinking about scenes of this movie again and again. What an absolutely lovely woman! As Anne's fortunes change for her, she becomes more and more beautiful and portrays a woman that no man could forget. Very well done! The only thing that would have made this movie better would have been for it to be much longer.
An absolutely fabulous movie
My favorite Jane Austen movie adaptation. From the moment the movie begins Ann's sadness and remorse is felt and shared. It is superbly acted and a delight to watch. If you like stories that touch your heart and movies built around characters and plot then please do yourself a favor and watch this movie.
Best Adaptation
Older versions are closer to the book, but don't capture the depth as this version does. Austen is subtle which can be difficult to adapt to film. But Root and Hinds are able to express the emotions of the characters through facial expressions and physical movement that provide the depth. I think the supporting characters are portrayed well. I just wish we could have seen Mrs. Smith more...she was great. One complaint of Austen adaptations is what gets cut to fit a 2 hour format, but this version has to be the best of all Austen adaptations. The movie doesn't show all of the book, but it shows the best parts. My only critique is that I would have preferred to have just heard Wentworth's voice during the reading of the letter as opposed to how it was presented (both Wentworth and Anne). For me, Wentworth's letter is one of my all time favorite scenes from a book.
