Plot Summary
Judi Dench stars in the story of Philomena Lee, mother to a boy conceived out of wedlock and given up for adoption. Nearly 50 years later, Philomena meets Martin Sixsmith (Steve Coogan), a former BBC reporter looking for his next big story. Together, they embark on a journey to locate her long lost son. As the pieces of the puzzle come together, the unlikely travel companions form a comic and heartwarming friendship. Based on the 2009 investigative book by Martin Sixsmith ‘The Lost Child of Philomena Lee’, the film adaptation has been hailed as “a triumph for Judi Dench. Brilliant. A performance of grace, nuance and cinematic heroism.” (Mary Corliss, TIME MAGAZINE)

Fresh: We wouldn't care about any of this if the performances were weak. But both actors find complexity and depth.
Fresh: Go beyond the manner of its telling and you find a story of cruelty and evil, of shocking acts committed under a veneer of civility and sanctity.
Fresh: "Philomena" is a tearjerker of rare honesty and craft.
Fresh: At its core, this clever, wrenching, profound story underscores the tenacity of faith in the face of unfathomable cruelty.

Best movie of 2013
Saw this in a theater. Hence, the early review.
Far and away the best movie I've seen this year. A story of loss, redemption, and good vs evil told with great acting (Judy Dench is a treasure), unexpected twists, and good humor. Proof that the English must all possess a little bit of Dickens in their souls. They simply produce the best drama available today.
One of the best!
Without a doubt, one of the best movies I’ve seen… ever. Judi Dench is simply magnificent.
