Plot Summary

The year is 1985. Rad Miracle (Marcello Conte) is a shy 13-year-old white kid who's obsessed with two things: ping pong and hip hop. During his family's annual summer vacation to Ocean City, Maryland, Rad makes a new best friend, experiences his first real crush, becomes the target of rich local bullies, and finds an unexpected mentor in his outcast next-door neighbor (Susan Sarandon). Ping Pong Summer is about that time in your life when you're treated like an alien by everyone around you, even though you know deep down you're as funky fresh as it gets.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: This gentle comedy, while entirely unmemorable, releases a genuine warmth that deflects harsh judgment. – Jeannette Catsoulis, New York Times, Jun 5, 2014

Fresh: A fun-but-slight coming-of-age story about an awkward Maryland teenager who becomes, well, not a man exactly, but a slightly more comfortable teenager, on a family vacation during the magical summer of 1985. – Chris Nashawaty, Entertainment Weekly, Jun 2, 2014

Fresh: [Tully achieves] a winning innocence of spirit in which performances and production design are all perfectly synched to his low-key comic vision. – Justin Chang, Variety, Jun 6, 2014

Rotten: A ho-hum memory piece that could have used a bit more objectivity, not to mention depth and energy. – Gary Goldstein, Los Angeles Times, Jun 5, 2014

Ping Pong Summer

In the age of Marvel 3D CG BS in the theaters, this movie not only is nostalgic for 30-40somethings being set in the 80's, it captures all the awkwardness EVERY teenager goes through. It's an instant cult classic. The casting, directing and script is brilliant and it can even be considered a family movie. Is that possible in an indie film?
The good guys do it again! All around! Definitely peep it! And what other soundtrack will you hear Til Tuesday and Mantronix? DO IT!

Unwatchable

The only way this movie could of been nerdier was if Adam Bobrow starred in it.
