Plot Summary
After a spectacular crash-landing on an uncharted planet, brash astronaut Leo Davidson (Mark Wahlberg) finds himself trapped in a savage world where talking apes dominate the human race. Desperate to find a way home, Leo must evade the invincible gorilla army led by ruthless General Thade (Tim Roth) and his most trusted warrior, Attar (Michael Clarke Duncan). Now the pulse-pounding race is on to reach a sacred temple that may hold the shocking secrets of mankind's past - and the last hope for it's salvation! Based on Pierre Boulle's classic novel "Planet of the Apes," the premise for this film has become one of the most recognized and provocative concepts in the canon of science fiction literature and cinema. Visionary filmmaker Tim Burton (Batman, Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow) has taken Boulle's basic idea and built upon it a uniquely envisioned journey to an incredible upside-down world.

Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: Call it a letdown, worsened by the forces of shoddy screenwriting.
Rotten: A campy, juiced-up ker-splat, busy with clumsy pyrotechnics and never nearing the vicinity of satire.
Fresh: The summer blockbuster we've been waiting for.
Fresh: Splendidly envisioned and boldly executed.

Good remake
The original film from 1968 had a greater impact because of the superb ending written by Rod Serling (creator of The Twilight Zone and Night Gallery). This version has an ending that is more consistent with the original novel by Pierre Boulle. Some are confused by the ending in this movie. Well, true sci-fi is supposed to make you think, make you ponder what could be as you leave the cinema (or turn off your DVD player).
Wow, That many people realy consider this comparable?
Ok, so 1993, Tim Burton comes around with "The Nightmare Before Christmas" a pretty cool flick, very popular... but wow, all of the sudden he's clear to remake the greatest classics? The Planet of the Apes from the sixties starring Charlton Heston is a true movie masterpiece, not a "good movie" a classic, taking some of the best writters and acting. Then He remakes Willy Wonka and The Chocholate Factory, with his kiddie, shallow, overproduced twists... Oh yeah, I guess he tries to follow the books...psh, please... The books were not perfect, they introduced the concepts, It's a C book, so Tim has an excuse to make a C movie. Back when movies were intelligent and directors had to be clever and geneous because they didn't have computers to make everything at their disposal... We saw a C book turned into an A+ film by Franklin Shaffner and ROD SERLING! Twilight Zone creater! You can't fix something that isn't broken! I mean, the Tim Burton worshipers are sheep, they will watch anything with him and Johnny Depp in it and give a standing ovation. Thankfuly, Depp is not the one ruining this movie, But you gotta give it a chance... it fails. another poor remake soon to be forgoten...or already forgotten. A shame. You CAN'T Compare this to the original, anyone with real taste will agree. But people don't watch old movies anymore!!!! Blockbuster Videos doesn't get new shipments of films that came out bhefore 1998, the classics will soon die. Thanks Tim Burton, You're Part of the problem.
Stinker -- good for a rental.
I remember seeing this before watching the actual Planet of the Apes films. Tim Burton really mangled up the original story and lines, making it very hard to follow. This is not one of Burton's best efforts, but if you're considering watching it then rent the movie. If you want a good experience, go check out the original Planet of the Apes films. Those are classics. This pile of dreck should be locked away for all eternity. 2 Stars - Poor.
