Plot Summary

Clint Eastwood made his directorial debut with this contemporary thriller about psychotic obsession. Eastwood also takes the lead in the starring role as Dave Garver, a popular radio disc jockey who repeatedly receives on-air phone requests from a sexy female fan to "play Misty for me." When the woman, Evelyn Draper (Jessica Walter), orchestrates a rendezvous with Dave at his favorite nightspot, the two begin a torrid affair. But when Dave decides to end the relationship, Evelyn's obsession turns to violence. Soon everything and everyone in Dave's life becomes a target for Evelyn's increasingly deadly campaign of terror. Beautifully photographed on location in Eastwood's hometown of Carmel, California, Play Misty for Me continues to be considered one of the great modern-day thrillers.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: I think the fault lies with Clint Eastwood the director, who has made too many easy decisions about events, about the management of atmosphere, about the treatment of performances. – Roger Greenspun, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Fresh: Eastwood displays a vigorous talent for sequences of violence and tension. He has obviously seen Psycho and Repulsion more than once, but those are excellent texts and he has learned his lessons passing well. – Jay Cocks, TIME Magazine, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: For that 80% of the film which constitutes the story, the structure and dialog create a mood of nervous terror which the other 20% nearly blows away. – Variety Staff, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: There is no purpose to a suspense thriller, I suppose, except to involve us, scare us, to give us moments of vicarious terror. Play Misty for Me does that with an almost cruel efficiency. – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times, Jul 7, 2010

This movie is great, and jessica walters (mother on arrested development) and of course, clint.....

Okay, great film. From the mood and the soundtrack and jazz atmosphere, the sweet bachelor lifestyle of disc jockey in Frisco, crazy Jessica Walters, the hot but elusive girl that Eastwoods character really wants, and just when about to get, crazy Jessica Walters blows it up.... The quiet storm is hilarious. Almost ladies man prior to ladies man but with a serious setting. as if ladies man's dad is clint eastwoods buddy at the station....sorry i do not have any of the character names. But this movie is genius and fatal attraction is a bloody ripoff. This is the original stalker chick loves ya too much and goes crazy when ya shut her down movie. Love Jessica Walters in this. And the views of northern cali, as in many of the dirty harry films, they use the scenery well as a gorgeous backdrop. Check this out and enjoy! Most do not know of this flick. good trivia lol!

Wonderful!

I totally agree. The movie is amazing as is Clint Eastwood. And yes, this movie was probably the inspration for Fatal Attraction with Glen Close and Michael Douglas but that doesn't make Fatal Attraction a bad movie by any means. I mean if you are taking your inspiration from a classic like this, how could you go wrong? And in repronse to the last reviewer, you clearly aren't from the Bay Area because anyone from here would never call SF "Frisco."

Really?

I found this movie boring and very hard to sit through.
