Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Playback posits cinema as a conduit for Satanic evil, but has nothing to say about the act of watching, except that its uniform horridness functions as an unintentional commentary on enduring pitiful horror-movie conventions. – Nick Schager, Slant Magazine, Mar 5, 2012

Tantalizing! Very cool flick with how the director weaved in the beginning of cinema history into a modern horror/thriller. I was riveted trying to figure out who the true heir was! Great cast, great story and who doesn't love Christian Slater as a bad guy? Definitely not your standard cabin in the woods horror film. An enjoyable thinking persons film. Cheers to the filmmakers!!

Has its issues, but overall good scare

This is clearly a low budget horror flick. I don't think anyone is trying to hide that. And some of the acting is not perfect, but in horror movies, when is it? The kids in this cast have a lot of potential and they'll learn. Johnny Pacar was fantastic (I thought, anyway) and Christian Slater was the perfect choice for a slimy cop.

What really drew me in was this story. I thought it was one of the most original horror plots I've seen in a long time, drawing inspiration from others but weaving it into a new perspective. And I honestly had NO idea who the baby was going to be until it happened, and that's rare for me. Gave some great scares, and was a nicely layered, complex movie...even if it was low budget.

Playback - scary good

That was awesome. When's the next one?
