Plot Summary

History gets the Disney kiddie treatment and a politically correct interpretation in the studio's 33rd feature-length animated movie, the first to be based on actual events and people. Pocahontas (Irene Bedard) is the daughter of Algonquin chief Powhatan (Russell Means), who promises her in marriage to Kocoum, a brave whom she doesn't love. Pocahontas would rather be paddling in her canoe or wandering in the forest, communing with nature and her animal pals, Meeko, a raccoon, and the hummingbird Flit. When European settlers arrive, she becomes enamored of handsome John Smith (Mel Gibson). Their attraction is encouraged by Grandmother Willow (Linda Hunt), a talking tree. The situation between their peoples is tense, however, as the settlers, led by Governor Ratcliffe (David Ogden Stiers) desperately want the gold that they're sure the natives are concealing. When a dutiful sentry, Thomas (Christian Bale) follows Smith into the woods on one of his secret meetings with Pocahontas, a tragic mistake leads both groups to the brink of war. Only the love of Pocahontas and Smith can prevent bloodshed. Pocahontas (1995) was awarded two Oscars, for Best Original Musical or Comedy Score and Best Original Song for "Colors of the Wind."

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Any damage such revisionist history may impose on young minds is offset by the honestly inspiring thoughts Pocahontas offers. – Janet Maslin, New York Times, Sep 2, 2008

Rotten: Why make a Disney cartoon and take all the fun out of it? – Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: Disney deserves praise for raising the ante on its ambitions in animation. Next time, though, a little less civics lesson and a little more heart. – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone, Sep 2, 2008

Rotten: Adult viewers, spoiled by what has come before, may feel that this film, which relates the legendary romance between a chief's daughter and English adventurer John Smith in the New World, is more by-the-numbers than inspired. – Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times, Sep 2, 2008

Absolutely Stunning

This movie was amazing. It's not sickeningly sweet, nor stereotypical, nor too immature for adults to watch. Viewers of all ages, no matter how old or young, will fall in love with this movie over and over again. It accurately depicts the greedy intentions of some of the settlers and yet doesn't make the entire group of them the enemy. Disney creates the story beautifully and shows us how a misunderstanding or intolerance can cause a situation to escalate into war. A masterpiece no one should miss.

Walt Disney's Pocahontas

Don't you just love the old Disney movies like "Pocahontas", "Cinderella", and "The Little Mermaid"? These movies are really "timeless classics". They really truly deserve to be called that. "Pocahontas", when I was about five, was my ultimate favorite movie ever, like most of kids around that era. I think most of the reasons why we love it so much is because it's what we grew up with and the songs, the characters, and the over-all movie, will always stay with us forever. In my case: the songs. The songs are priceless and the video-parts that trail along with them make up this movie that we know and love for...well...everything; everything ever-made about it. I mean, who could really describe this movie? iTunes shouldn't have a Costumer Review on this! It's already an early classic of Walt Disney's perfection of perfect! Sometimes, and this is one of the times, where originality and basic-common-sense over rules everything else. Even though, I haven't watched this movie since maybe I was eight, at the most, I love it and remember everything about it: those red leaves, the wind, the faces, that blue necklace, that deep sky when John Smith was about to be killed...I remember stuff like that. Disney perfected originality once again. "Again"; so when will they do it "again"? There has been a big change in Disney these past few decades...when will they bring back magic again? Not only bring back the magic and the classics...make some more...

Great story and message

One of the most beautifully animated Disney movies, Pocahontas is a sweet and simple movie, but it is still mature enough for adults to appreciate it. Colors of the Wind is one of my favorite Disney songs, because of the moving music and meaningful lyrics. This movie has a great message that the world needs to be reminded of.
