Plot Summary

Mike Nichols lends some comic structure to Carrie Fisher's best-selling confessional novel concerning a woman's struggles with drug addiction and mother-daughter rivalry (subjects Fisher admits to understanding all too well). Meryl Streep, in her most full-blown comic performance up to that point, plays Suzanne Vale, a popular movie actress well on her way to a Hollywood crack-up. Suzanne suffers from blackouts and memory lapses, and awakens in the beds of men she doesn't remember; she is a barely-functioning wreck on the set of her latest movie. When a coke dealer who delivers stops by her dressing room between takes, she swiftly finds herself being rushed to the hospital, suffering the effects of a narcotics bender. While in detox, Suzanne attempts to piece her life and career back together, but her confidence is shattered when her mother arrives at the rehab clinic — Doris Mann, a famed film icon from the 1950s and 1960s (Shirley MacLaine). Doris is soon soaking up the adulation and applause of Suzanne's fellow recovering drug addicts. Upon Suzanne's release, she must compete with her mother for attention and fame as she tries to walk a thin line as a recovering drug abuser.

enjoyed every minute

This movie is based on the book of the same name, which was loosely based on the life of Carrie Fisher (daughter of Eddie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds). Not only is it an entertaining story with little glimpses of old and new behind-the-scenes Hollywood, which is enjoyable enough, but it's also so well written, directed and acted. Meryl Streep and Shirley MacLaine are just amazingly good actors, and Mike Nichols is a great director - so it's hardly surprising that the movie worked. But Carrie Fisher's life story, and her humorous retelling of it is what makes this movie great. I highly recommend it.

Humorous and insightful with great performances by Meryl Streep and Shirley MacLaine

Adapted by Carrie Fisher from her "semi-autobiography", Postcards from the Edge is one of cinema's most under-appreciated comedy/dramas. Meryl Streep, in an Oscar-nominated performance, plays the role of an up-and-coming movie star who is also the daughter of a 1950s film icon (played by Shirley MacLaine). MacLaine's performance is nothing short of spectacular. But it is the combination of the two actresses that really makes this movie shine. Dennis Quaid's performance is less noteworthy, but he plays his role well. Perhaps one of the best features of the film are the several full vocal pieces by Meryl Streep (who sings 2 full songs during the film) and MacLaine who also has a full vocal performance. This isn't a musical though. It is, however, a great film with two great actresses.

Carrie Fisher's Story Of Hollywood Life With A Famous Mother

The main character is about an actress who is a pill popping star searching for love,in the wrong places. She has a mothe who pushed her buttons, yet we see the love between them.Meryl Streep is the actress and her mother is played by Shirley MacLaine who is suppose to be based on the actress Debbie Reynolds and Streeps character based on the actress Carrie Fisher of Star Wars fame. I suppose this movie is a dramedy.part drama and comedy. This is one of my favorite films.Streep was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in this movie. Postcards From The Edge has been for rent on itunes forever. When can I buy it on itunes???!!! Its so frustrating not to be able to put this on my video ipod permanently !!!
