Plot Summary

John Travolta leads an all-star cast (including Oscar® winners Emma Thompson, Kathy Bates and Billy Bob Thornton) on a wild race to the presidency in this savagely funny comedy. Jack Stanton (Travolta) is a virtually unknown Southern governor on a quest for the White House with his strong, savvy and equally ambitious wife, Susan (Thompson). Running against the odds, the Stantons need all the help they can get from their extremely colorful political team. Together, they take off on a hilarious, heart-wrenching and ultimately history-making roller coaster ride to the top.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Adapting Joe Klein's roman a clef of the same name, ferociously witty screenwriter Elaine May and her smooth old compatriot in comedy, director Mike Nichols, have made a zingy drama and have staffed it well. – Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: Travolta's warmth and expansiveness effectively amplify and embellish the likable and personable side of Stanton. – Todd McCarthy, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: A smart and savvy piece of work. – Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times, Jan 22, 2006

Rotten: May and Nichols may not be right for the material, especially the Searching for Jimmy Stewart component, which feels more labored as the film proceeds. – Jeff Millar, Houston Chronicle, Mar 7, 2001

Mike Nichols and Elaine May

This is a fantastic film, as it packs in so much information so fast, keeps moving at a fast clip, is expertly acted, creatively directed by Mr. Nichols and brilliantly written by Ms. May.

Not a comedy

The plot summary says "savagely funny comedy." I think that's a big misnomer. It's not that it was a bad comedy, it's that it was not a comedy at all. There weren't jokes or very many funny situations. I saw this as a drama, with 2-3 chuckles thrown in but really it did not seem to be trying to be comedy. So I don't know what whoever wrote the plot summary was thinking about.

As a drama I thought it was ok. But if you;re looking for a comedy, this is not your movie.
