Plot Summary
In THE PRINCESS OF MONTPENSIER, acclaimed filmmaker Bertrand Tavernier ('ROUND MIDNIGHT) directs a spectacular cast in a riveting, lush romantic drama set in the high courts of 16th Century France. Against the backdrop of the savage Catholic/Protestant wars, Marie de Mézières (Mélanie Thierry), a beautiful young aristocrat, finds herself married to a young prince (Grégoire Leprince-Ringuet, LOVE SONGS) she does not love, haunted by a rakish suitor Gaspard Ulliel (A VERY LONG ENGAGEMENT) from her childhood, and advised by an aging nobleman Lambert Wilson (OF GODS AND MEN), harboring his own forbidden desire for her. The Princess of Montpensier must struggle passionately to stay alive in the intrigue of this corrupt political and romantic web of duty, passion, religion and war.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: Like its heroine, helmer Bertrand Tavernier's visitation to 16th-century France has both beauty and brains, and offers a portrait of renaissance life leagues more accurate than the most historical epics.
Fresh: Though the movie is often powerful and sexy, it's also opaque at its center.
Fresh: "The Princess of Montpensier" tells a fairly domestic story, albeit one involving high stakes and exalted people, major players in the ruling Catholic government.
Rotten: An engrossing subplot tracks the older man's chaste devotion to the young man's wife, which Tavernier parallels with his love of Christ; unfortunately the routine love triangle takes up most of the screen time.

The Princess of Montpensier
Fantastic acting....classic story of the folly of falling in love based on passion, with a man whose intentions are based on competitiveness, rather than love. Oh how many of us wish we went with the steady true love rather than simple lust? Done in a fresh way with great cast, plot and costumes...beautiful.
Amazing
I could go on and on about the brilliance of this movie, great strory, great acting. Worth all five stars.
Bad bad bad
İ even like cheesy hollywood chick flicks but this movie is a boring, ever so repeated story, with no real emotion or ingenuity. İ personally found it to be a waste of time and money.
