Plot Summary

Israel is a country that is loved, hated, and often misunderstood by much of the world. Who really belongs there? Why is Jerusalem so important? Why do some believe in a messiah who will put things right? Amidst this seemingly endless battle over land and religion, surfing has emerged as an escape from the controversy. Promised Land is a unique look at this ancient place through the lives of two friends from different faiths, brought together by their love of the oceans that separate them. A FilmBuff Presentation.

Rotten: A well-intentioned look at a fraught issue, but the Damon-Krasinski screenplay ultimately opts for Hollywood oversimplification. – Rafer Guzman, Newsday, Jan 3, 2013

understated beauty

In the midst of ancient and still very contemporary hostilities, surfing in the Promised Land is providing a point of mutual interest, mutual understanding, and mutual enjoyment. It’s a new angle on an old problem, and this video tells the story with peaceful simplicity, cinematic beauty, and obvious delight. Promised Land brings Jews, Christians, and Muslims together, and yet it finds a way, tastefully and unobtrusively, to raise serious issues for discussion.

Taken by surprise

When I first watched this film, I had no idea what to expect. I was taken by surprise of how interested I was in this documentary. The people are so relatable, regardless of their interests and backgrounds. It's very eye-opening to see that so many people are working toward the same goal, love the same things, and have the same values. Some of the issues dividing the middle east are laid to rest in this film, showing that the most important thing is doing what you love and finding peace in that. I would recommend this to anyone
