Plot Summary

Unable to bear the brutality and repeated rapes by her alcoholic husband, Kiran Ahluwalia, a Punjabi housewife and mother of two in London, sets him on fire and kills him. Charged with first-degree murder, she is sentenced to life imprisonment, where she befriends her cellmate. Moved by her story, the cellmate asks her stepbrother, a highly respected queen’s counsel to file her appeal. Her case comes to the notice of a group of South Asian social workers. They bring her plight to the attention of the media by organising rallies to gather public support for her freedom. She is ultimately freed by the judicial system.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: In keeping its inflammatory subject matter at arm's length, Provoked does exactly the same to its audience. – Jeannette Catsoulis, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Rotten: Director Jag Mundhra doesn't do enough to clarify that killing, however horrible the man, really isn't okay, even for beautiful women. – Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly, Jul 7, 2010

Rotten: Director Jag Mundhra expends so much energy and screen time to sway us to take Kiranjit's side -- really, we're on her side, we're on her side -- that he doesn't have much left over for anything else. – Carina Chocano, Los Angeles Times, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: Provoked is a feminist homily of the shrillest order. – Ed Gonzalez, Village Voice, Jun 24, 2010
