Plot Summary

Criminal on the run, Marion Crane (Anne Heche) takes refuge at the motel operated by Norman Bates (Vince Vaughn) - a troubled man whose victims encounter a grisly fate at the hands of his "mother." Marion soon becomes the next victim and her disappearance prompts inquiries from her sister (Julianne Moore) and a private investigator (William H. Macy). They both soon discover the morbid bond linking Norman to his mysterious "mother" at the Bates Motel. Relive the terror in acclaimed director Gus Van Sant's all new version of Alfred Hitchcock's masterpiece of suspense… Psycho.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: It remains the most structurally elegant and sneakily playful of thrillers! – Janet Maslin, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Rotten: Contains nothing to outrage or offend partisans of the original, yet neither does it stand to add much to their appreciation. – Godfrey Cheshire, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Rotten: The movie lacks the chutzpah to even be a travesty. – J. Hoberman, Village Voice, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: The movie is an invaluable experiment in the theory of cinema, because it demonstrates that a shot-by-shot remake is pointless; genius apparently resides between or beneath the shots, or in chemistry that cannot be timed or counted. – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times, Jul 7, 2010

NO.

Everyone- see the Hitchcock original. It's much better. This still wouldn't have been a good movie even if it wasn't a remake of a classic and didn't have such big shoes to fill.
