Second Best Kid's Movie Ever Made -- All this and Mama Cass, too!
I saw Pufnstuf in glorious full 70mm at the Parklane Theatre in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I was six years old. I was also a genius kid with glasses. Watching most kiddie movies was torture for me; but not this one. I loved every frame. I'll never forget how I felt when I heard Mama Cass belt out the chorus to "Different" for the first time. Chills ran down my spine. Here was a song telling me it was better to be different that be the same! Pufnstuf was downright subversive! For the first time, I realized that maybe, just maybe, it was *good* to be Different. And maybe, just maybe, I could -- would -- fit somewhere someday. And that's powerful knowledge... Sid & Marty Krofft were masters of delivering a message wrapped in laughter. Pufnstuf is deliciously campy and obviously written for both children *and* adults. Sid & Marty Krofft's entire output is entertaining and campy-- and it ALL assumes that children are capable of understanding and compassion. Unlike most children's fare of today, Pufnstuf is well written and on many levels thoughtful. It's a guilty pleasure and a delight. Not to be missed. PS -- The Best Children's movie is Nilsson's The Point! in case you're wondering... Grin.
