Plot Summary

Tom Selleck portrays Quigley, an American cowboy who is lured to the Austrailian outback (of the 1860's) by an offer from a powerful sheep rancher/land baron (Alan Rickman) to use his sharpshooter skills to shoot troublesome dingoes. What Quigley finds out when he arrives is that Rickman really wants to use his skills to help wipe out the native Aborigine population as part of the country's "pacification by force." A man of moral integrity, Quigley strongly declines this murderous duty and throws his new boss through the window, so... now it's war between them. Also confusing the situation (as well as enlivening it) is a somewhat deranged "trallop" (Laura San Giacomo) who erroneously thinks Quigley is her husband.

Underrated classic

I remember when this film was released back in england and my brother, a synic of most things, had seen it and told me it was 'brilliant'. I watched and within the first 15 minutes knew I was watching something very different. This is a gem of film, a missed classic and an example of completely original film making. The cast are most excellent but Selleck and Rickman have amazing chemistry and each of them brings unique qualities to their parts. For my money though it was the script and Selleck that made this film. Easily Tom Selleck's shinning hour.

A Rare Gem of a Modern Western

Amid films with lavish special effects, over-the-top mega-star performances and outrageous storyline concepts comes a classic Western set in the outback of Australia. Quigley Down Under is a charmer, or rather, Tom Selleck is, and I say that with an unblemished record of heterosexuality. Q is a buffalo hunter that has the amazing talent of being able to send a Sharps rifled bullet more than 900 yards to hit his target. Today's sniper would find that laughable, but in the 1870s that was considered near impossible. Quigley is brought to Australia by an evil land baron (Alan Ricks) to rid his ranch of Aborigines. Quigley finds that despicable and proceeds to alienate the villain -- well, you must see the conflict to appreciate it. Selleck and Ricks both give outstanding performances and the action is tough and gritty. Add a love interest, authentic locales and a terrific soundtrack and you have a winning combination that will satsify. For me, the 1874 Sharp's Buffalo Rifle was as much a star as Selleck! Love westerns? Do not miss this flick.
