Plot Summary
Quills images the final days of history's most infamous sexual adventurer, the Marquis de Sade. A nobleman with a literary flair, the Marquis lives in a madhouse where a beautiful laundry maid (Winslet) smuggles his erotic stories to a printer, defying orders from the asylum's resident priest (Phoenix). The titillating passages whip all of France into a sexual frenzy, until a fiercely conservative doctor (Caine) tries to put an end to the fun, inadvertently stoking the excitement to a fever pitch. Featuring a cast that includes Academy Award® winner Geoffrey Rush, Oscar nominee Kate Winslet, rising star Joaquin Phoenix, and Academy Award® winner Michael Caine, Quills playfully turns Sade’s story into a sexy, sinister and shattering tale he himself might have written.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: The material benefits from a top-rank cast that fleshes out what could seem merely an exercise in philosophy.
Rotten: More heavy-handed than memorable.
Fresh: A rare Hollywood movie that is about the nature of eroticism without being afraid of its own power to arouse.
Fresh: Kaufman is one of the great, underappreciated maestros of the movies, and his work here is indeed masterly.

Haunting
Probably one of the more disturbing movies I have ever seen, yet it is still disturbing in a very captivating way. It is hard to not let your thoughts drift back to this movie after you watch it, because it does display a side of humanity usually avoided. I highly suggest watching this movie, though this is not for the fans of the Hollywood-afied dumbed down movies. All the performances are brilliant and captivating, and the plot is simply brilliant.
Great movie
Great movie. If you have not seen it is a must see. Although not historically acurate, it has a good story & great acting by all. Too bad it is only for rent. I would buy it elsewhere to own or wait until you can buy from Apple.
Disturbingly Gripping
I've seen this movie on countless occasions. It's distubingly gripping. Each of the characters intertwines themselves so well into the story that you can't tear your eyes away from the screen. The ending is particularly disturbing and unforgettable with each of the characters discovering their own gruesome fates. Not to mention, when you take away everything from a man to keep him from writing, he still finds a way to show the world his words. Definitely well worth a watch.
