Plot Summary

Artfully directed by Richard Benjamin, Racing with the Moon is a film so tender, so insightful, so full of heart that you'll never quite forget it. This is the story of Henry "Hopper" Nash (Sean Penn) and his buddy Nicky (Nicolas Cage) enjoying their last boyish exploits before they enter the Marines. Elizabeth McGovern portrays Penn's mysterious girlfriend. What ensues is a tender, bittersweet tale of lost innocence and the trauma of growing up too fast. The result is a magic moment, brilliantly captured within the emotional crosscurrent of America's most dramatic time.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: An exceptionally appealing movie about subjects you may think you've already had enough of -- growing up, first love and the shouldering of arms and other responsibilities. – Vincent Canby, New York Times, Sep 16, 2008

Fresh: It's easy to end a movie with 'I love you,' but it's hard to get there honestly. – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times, Jul 7, 2010

Rotten: Very little seems to happen in this social vacuum, and none of it is memorable. – Time Out, Sep 16, 2008

Rotten: It lacks [My Favourite Year's] winning charm. – Film4, Jun 24, 2010

itunes real release dates please!

I wish Itunes would put the actual dates that movies came out. So annoying -- 2004? What does that even really have to do with this movie? Really, really lame.

very early nic, but awesome!!!!

this movie is a must buy for nicolas cage fans. you never really know who the movie features more, it kind of teeters between nic and sean penn. but it's an awesome view for anyone who remembers that one summer, maybe their last summer, before life changes forever, and you must grow up. and in this film's characters cases, grow up really fast. the bowling alley scene is by far my favorite, it captures the true feeling of youth. buy this movie.

Released in 1984, not 2004
