Plot Summary

Lorraine Bracco, John Heard and Oscar winner Ben Johnson (Best Supporting Actor, The Last PictureShow) star in this moving story of a family torn apart by violence - and healed by imagination. Elijah Wood and Joseph Mazzello co-star as Bracco's two young sons, devoted brothers who escape their chaotic family life with dreams of flying. Inspired by a local legend, they attempt to build a working airplane. And in the process of transforming their ordinary red wagon into a fantastical flying machine, they transform their own lives into an extraordinary adventure. A beautifully-made movie filled with all the heartache and joy of childhood, Radio Flyer is "daring, amazing, and wonderful.A deeply moving film." (Dennis Cunningham, WCBS-TV)

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Richard Donner's Radio Flyer is one of those infrequent and embarrassing efforts of a perfectly adequate Hollywood director to make the kind of offbeat movie for which he has no aptitude at all. – Vincent Canby, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Rotten: If nothing else, Radio Flyer is an original: The first feel-good movie about child abuse. – Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly, May 20, 2013

Rotten: A film one would like to like more. – Variety Staff, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Rotten: Radio Flyer is a well-meaning failure, a muddled fantasy about child abuse that ponderously attempts to combine the grace of legend with the earnestness of a public-service announcement. – Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times, May 20, 2013
